Mi historia
Me llamo Berenguela de Castilla.
Hija de Leonor Plantagenet y Alfonso VIII.
Nieta de Leonor de Aquitania y de Enrique II Plantagenet.
La historia me recuerda como Berenguela la Grande.
Me casé con Alfonso IX de León, quien anteriormente había estado unido a Teresa de Portugal.
Fui madre de dos hijos y tres hijas.
Entre ellos, Fernando III el Santo… futuro rey de Castilla y León, esposo de Beatriz de Suabia y padre de Alfonso X el Sabio.
Podría contarles muchas cosas sobre mi vida…
Sobre mi infancia.
Sobre mi matrimonio con Alfonso IX en la iglesia colegiata de Santa María la Mayor de Valladolid.
O sobre cómo logré unir Castilla y León, apaciguando enfrentamientos con Navarra, Portugal y Aragón mediante pactos y negociaciones diplomáticas… sin derramamiento de sangre.
Fui regente del reino de Castilla…
Y después, correinante junto a mi hijo Fernando III.
Dicen de mí que poseía una extraordinaria habilidad para gobernar:
inteligencia, agudeza, tacto, perspicacia… y, sobre todo, prudencia.
Virtudes que me llevaron a negociar complejos acuerdos y largas treguas.
Mi vínculo con esta maravillosa villa comenzó cuando contraje matrimonio con Alfonso IX.
Me convertí entonces en una mujer poderosa y acaudalada.
Recibí treinta castillos con sus alfoces y abundantes rentas anuales como dote, patrimonio acordado en las capitulaciones de Palencia.
Más tarde se añadirían nuevas rentas vitalicias… entre ellas, Tiedra.
Cuando mi matrimonio fue anulado por el papa Inocencio III, alegando parentesco, todos mis bienes pasaron a mi hijo Fernando III.
Pero antes de ello, tuvieron lugar tratados, pactos y acuerdos decisivos.
Alfonso IX confirmó la cesión a mi hijo de los castillos de las arras…
Y además, de Tiedra y Alba de Aliste.
La donación de estos castillos, junto con sus alfoces, derechos y pertenencias, quedaría establecida por juro de heredad para siempre.

My name is Berenguela of Castile.
Daughter of Eleanor Plantagenet and Alfonso VIII.
Granddaughter of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II Plantagenet.
History remembers me as Berenguela the Great.
I married Alfonso IX of León, who had previously been married to Teresa of Portugal.
I was the mother of two sons and three daughters.
Among them was Ferdinand III the Saint... future King of Castile and León, husband of Beatrice of Swabia and father of Alfonso X the Wise.
I could tell you many things about my life...
About my childhood.
About my marriage to Alfonso IX in the Collegiate Church of Saint Mary Major in Valladolid.
Or about how I succeeded in uniting Castile and León, easing conflicts with Navarre, Portugal and Aragon through pacts and diplomatic negotiations... without bloodshed.
I served as Regent of the Kingdom of Castile...
And later as co-ruler alongside my son Ferdinand III.
It is said that I possessed an extraordinary talent for governing:
intelligence, sharpness, tact, insight... and, above all, prudence.
These virtues led me to negotiate complex agreements and long-lasting truces.
My connection with this wonderful town began when I married Alfonso IX.
I then became a powerful and wealthy woman.
I received thirty castles with their surrounding districts and substantial annual revenues as my dowry, a patrimony agreed in the Capitulations of Palencia.
Later, new life annuities would be added... among them, Tiedra.
When my marriage was annulled by Pope Innocent III on the grounds of kinship, all my possessions passed to my son Ferdinand III.
But before that, decisive treaties, pacts and agreements took place.
Alfonso IX confirmed the transfer to my son of the castles included in the marriage settlement...
And also of Tiedra and Alba de Aliste.
The donation of these castles, together with their surrounding districts, rights and possessions, was established as a hereditary grant in perpetuity.
